Senior Company Officer Jimmy Syrett, up with the branchmen, sends a progress report to Local Control. He is using one of the early walkie talkies with a throat, or larynx, microphone, supplied by the Royal Corps of Signals. These sets transmitted a good signal provided there was no local interference, i.e. the operator standing close to a corrugated iron fence. When this occured, the operator had to change position; sometimes merely pivoting on the same spot had the desired effect
